Our Firearm Plating Process
Step 1: Inspection
First, we inspect the firearm for its current finish, condition, function, and metal types. We do this because different finishes require different removal processes and different finishes will only adhere to certain metals.
Step 2: Disassemble
The firearm is completely or near completely disassembled to its basic parts. We do not disassemble any parts that are crimped together nor any that would require cutting or destroying other parts.
Step 3: Cleaning
The parts are then submerged into a heated cleaning solution. This removes oils, grease, and any other contaminants for the next step.
Step 4: Finish Removal
The current firearm finish will determine its removal process. Our removal processes include, but are not limited to, bead blasting, various acid baths, and light sanding. The parts are then cleaned from any remaining acids and prepared for the next step.
Step 5: Polishing
Now that the parts have been stripped of their previous finish, and their bare metal exposed, the parts are then polished using various buffing/polishing wheels. The glossiness is directly proportional to the amount of time spent polishing the parts.
Step 6: Cleaning and Preparation
The parts are then submerged into a second round of cleaning solution to ensure that there are no contaminants that may affect the plating process. This is the best time to plate the metal as it has not had a chance to build up an oxidized barrier to the air. Each individual part (this includes pins, screws, and bushings) is then tied with copper wire to ensure they make a solid electrical connection for the electroplating process.
Step 7: Nickel Strike
The parts are then briefly submerged into our nickel strike tank. This serves as the activator for the plating process and promotes adhesion to its new nickel finish applied in the next step.
Step 8: Nickel Plate
The parts are then electroplated in a nickel plating solution until the desired finish is reached.
Step 8.5: Gold Plate
If gold plating is desired, the parts are then cleaned off and electroplated in our gold plating solution until the desired finish is reached.
Step 9: Oil
The parts are then cleaned off again and dipped in oil.
Step 10: Reassemble
The firearm is then carefully reassembled with oil and grease applied where appropriate. We then gently wipe the firearm down with a microfiber cloth.
